Bob Kaylor at Devils Lake
Bob & Joy were part of the
"first wave" of UCMC pioneers. In Bob's words:
I started climbing in 1955(?)
at Devils Lake because I missed out on a canoe trip with the Outing
Club, and because Mike Fain worked in the lab where I worked. Joy
started about four years later because she wanted to get out of Chicago
one Spring, and kept coming because she thought I had sexy legs. After
moving to Maryland in 1961(?), Climbing trips were few. We
climbed the cable route on Long's one summer when our boys were 7 and
9. Later we back-packed into the San Juans to duplicate the
famous 1960 trip, but were kept out of No-name basin because of snow.
We hiked and back-packed parts of the Appalachain trail through NC, VA,
MD, and PA. We also hiked most of the trails in Shenandoah
National park. By the late 1960s, my acrophobia was so bad I had
trouble looking out of a second story window, so climbing was
out! In the late 1970s, Joy went back to college and earned a BS
and MS in nursing, became a Nurse Practitioner and has since worked
mainly in college health clincs since then.
After retiring and moving to
Colorado in 1988, we started skiing again, hiking, back-packing, and
bicycling. We have taken bike tours in Germany, Ireland, Wales,
England, and Scotland. In 1996 we started bicycle racing - Joy is
very good, I'm average. Joy also started throwing about the same
time - in 2003 she won the USATF National Masters Weight Pentathlon in
her age group. She is now spending most of her time with a senior
womans basketball team.
